Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997)
The props used in the scene give us a lot of context for what's going on. As Cinderella takes off from the palace, we can see a singular glass slipper left behind. This prop is significant because this is the piece of evidence that the prince uses to find her again after the ball. This full shot is taken with deep focus, taking in the golds and tans that take up the frame. Amongst the warm colors, Cinderella's dress pops out against it as a pale blue in the striking light. The golden railing with such intricate details on the sides show us the exterior of the palace, and help to show us where she really is in the scene, even without context. The lighting is bright and harsh, which can be used to symbolize that this is a really important moment for her, full of anticipation as she leaves before the magic of her dress and accessories leaves her. Cinderella's dress is from the magic of her fairy godmother, and the sparkling pale blue stands out when in such a warm and golden environment such as the palace. Cinderella os placed rather far from the camera, and at the bottom of the steps on the far right of the shot. This shows us that she's leaving the castle, at the bottom of the steps, and on her way back home before the magic wears off. The makeup used in the shot on Cinderella is pale smokey blue eyeshadow, which is used to highlight the pale blues of her dress. This shot helps to convey the whimsical and enchanting aura of such a classic fairy tale, in one of it's most important moments.
True Beauty (2020)
The props used in this scene help to show us what's going on here. The two characters in this shot, Seo Jun and his mother, and both in a hospital room, and we can see various hospital equipments blurred in the background. These props are significant because Seo Jun's mother has been in and out of the hospital due to various complications. This closeup shot is taken with shallow focus, focusing on Seo Jun reuniting with his mom in the moment. Seo Jun's scarlet red blazer contrasts with all of the white behind him in the hospital room. Seo Jun's warm skin tone and blazer make him the focus of the scene, with shallow focus blurring the background behind him. The lighting is very soft and gentle, which conveys the fond sentimentality of Seo Jun reuniting with his mom after her being in the hospital for so long. This shows us how close he is to his mother, and shows how much she truly means to him, and how he's relieved that she is ok. Will's bright neon green shirt and bright blue hat and shorts contrast with the many neutral browns and blacks of the house's interior around him. The lighting is harsh and bright, signifying that this is an exciting and important day for Will, as his first day living with the Banks. This shows us how much of an exciting and new experience this is for Will, and how much of a change it is for him. This shot helps to convey the excitement and anticipation that Will has for his new life in Bel-Air.
